BIOGRAPHY
Mark Courtney is intimately familiar with the nuances of international patent licensing, resulting from over twelve years as in-house counsel for a company having a prominent licensing activity. Mark understands all phases of a successful licensing program - from prosecuting patents having strategic value to evaluating potentially adverse patents - and he brings this in depth understanding to his various representations today.
In addition to licensing activities, Mark has considerable experience in drafting and prosecuting strategic patent applications. As in-house counsel, Mark managed a large segment of the company's patent portfolio. In doing so, he relied upon and kept current his practical engineering experience as an integrated circuit architect for Texas Instruments, Inc. While an engineer, Mark focused on the design and development of digital integrated circuits and has technical experience in circuit design, layout, simulation, verification, and CAD systems.
In private practice, Mark has focused his practice on advising companies on patent portfolio management, patent licensing and litigation support, and patent preparation and prosecution. Mark's clients appreciate his combination of technical skills and legal abilities. His ability to look at every situation from both the technical and the legal perspective allows Mark to offer out of the box thinking to his clients.
EDUCATION
Mark received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1982 and his master's degree in electrical engineering from Southern Methodist University in 1986. In 1993, Mark graduated cum laude from Southern Methodist University's Dedman School of Law, where he was a recipient of the Richards Medlock Andrews Patent Law Award.
